The club's predecessor was Kyoto Shikoh Club, founded in 1922, which changed its name to Kyoto Purple Sanga in 1993 and to Kyoto Sanga in 2007. The team name is a combination of the team color "purple," which has been used since the Kyoto Purple Club, the Sanskrit word "sanga," which means "friend," and "sanga," which is an image of Kyoto, the city of mountains, rivers, and lakes.
