How Mixed Martial Arts started in Japan?

Mixed martial arts (Sogo-Kakutogi) is a type of combat sport in which fighters compete to win by using striking (punches and kicks), throwing, and solid techniques (kokomi techniques, joint techniques, and choking techniques). Mixed Martial Arts" or "MMA" for short. As the name suggests, Mixed Martial Arts is a martial art in which fighters compete in a competition of skills by eliminating the restrictions on means of attack imposed by the rules to the maximum extent possible. While most striking-based martial arts prohibit locking and throwing techniques and most kumite-based martial arts prohibit striking, Mixed Martial Arts allows both, and is therefore also called "a martial art where anything goes.
In general, it is necessary to have both "striking (standing) martial arts," such as boxing and karate, in which fighters fight from a standing position using punches, kicks, and other striking techniques, and "kumite (teamwork) martial arts," such as wrestling, judo, and Brazilian jiu-jitsu, in which fighters fight by using techniques such as locking and throwing in a team with their opponents.
Major Organizations
UFCThe UFC was founded in 1968 as a result of a tournament won by the Gracie family's Hoyce Gracie in a PPV event on American cable television, which led to the full-scale introduction of "baritudo" mixed martial arts, which had been practiced in Brazil under "anything goes" rules. The "wire mesh, ultimate rules" style of competition had a profound influence on the subsequent holding of mixed martial arts tournaments in many countries around the world.
The UFC, which began as a "no-rules" fight tournament, is now a well-established style, with commission rulings, matchmaking by weight class, etc., and has become a professional boxing organization. The UFC is now closer to "sports combat sports" such as professional boxing, with its commissioned judging, matchmaking by weight class, and so on.The UFC is undoubtedly the world's premier fighting organization at this point, and it is the stage that all mixed martial artists aspire to compete on.
PRIDEPRIDE was born in 1997 as an event pitting professional wrestler Nobuhiko Takada against jiu-jitsu master Hickson Gracie. Initially, the event was held under the name "PRIDE.1" as a one-time event, and became the talk of the town when tickets for expensive VIP seats were put on sale.
At the time of its launch, matches were held under various rules, but the rules were changed to those of mixed martial arts as fighters from around the world competed to become "the best in the world" and "the strongest mankind. PRIDE matches are often so heated that one cannot take one's eyes off the screen, and it can be said that PRIDE, along with UFC, was the catalyst for the rapid increase in the number of mixed martial arts fans around the world.

K-1K-1 started in 1993 as one of the largest martial arts events. The "K" in K-1 is an acronym for various types of standing martial arts, including kickboxing, kung fu, kenpo, and karate. As a striking standing martial art, front kicks, kicks to the opponent's inner thighs, flying kicks, and knee kicks are effective points in K-1.The rules are similar to those of boxing: a fighter wins if he knocks his opponent down and cannot get up for 10 seconds.Attacking with the head or elbows is considered a foul and will result in a warning or point deduction.
The fights are often bloody due to the fierce exchanges of blows, but these heated fights have captivated martial arts fans around the world. The terrestrial broadcasts of these events have also gained the support of many in the public, and have been a driving force in expanding martial arts to the general public. The announcement of the return of K-1 in 2014 has created a great deal of buzz.

It was an event that was supported by many people on terrestrial broadcasting and was the driving force behind the expansion of martial arts into the general public.

DREAMThis new event was launched by FEG, which had operated the mixed martial arts event HERO'S until 2007, with former staff members of Dream Stage Entertainment, which had operated the mixed martial arts event PRIDE.FEG and the former PRIDE had an adversarial relationship since 2003, but following the suspension of PRIDE in 2007, a new mixed martial arts event "Yarennoka! New Year's Eve! 2007" on New Year's Eve 2007, and this relationship developed into the birth of DREAM.
Shigeru Saeki, president of the mixed martial arts tournament DEEP, serves as DREAM's public relations manager, and the event is linked to DREAM as a gateway to success for DEEP.The event is also linked with the Dynamite! on New Year's Eve, where regular DREAM fighters participated in fights under DREAM rules.

The event was also held in conjunction with Dynamite! and DREAM's regular fighters participated and DREAM rules matches were held.

DEEPDEEP was launched on January 8, 2001, and was called the "toy box of martial arts" because of its high-profile matchmaking, including matches with pro-wrestlers and matches featuring referee Yoshinori Wada.
When Dream Stage Entertainment launched the PRIDE Bushido series in September 2003, it formed a business alliance with DEEP representative Saeki, and DEEP was positioned as a subordinate organization of PRIDE. Since then, DEEP has focused on Japanese middle- and lightweight fighters, and began holding tournaments at venues the size of Korakuen Hall.
Currently, its main events include "DEEP IMPACT", "DEEP CAGE IMPACT", and "clubDEEP".It was announced that the first New Year's Eve event "DEEP DREAM IMPACT 2014 - New Year's Eve special" will be held on December 31, 2014 at Saitama Super Arena.
ShutoShuto was founded in 1984 by Satoshi Sayama, the first Tiger Mask, with the goal of turning mixed martial arts into a competition. The martial art here was called "shooting" from the pro wrestling cloak of "shoot," after the initial name "new martial arts," but later the name "Shuto" was applied to the sport in order to avoid confusion with shooting competitions, etc. The name "Shuto" was later adopted to mean "to master the art of fighting.
Although Satoshi Sayama stepped down from all operations in 1996, Rumina Sato, Hayato "Mach" Sakurai, Kaoru Uno, and others were featured in fashion and subcultures from this time until around 2000, and gained popularity. The "International Shuto Commission" is established, dividing the rankings into World, Pacific Rim, Europe, and the Americas.
The professional licensing system and amateur system are well established, making it an ideal place to gain experience, and most of today's leading fighters come from the amateur Shuto circuit.

The professional license system and amateur system are well established, and most of the current front-line fighters are from this amateur sport.
PancrasePancrase is a Japanese mixed martial arts organization. In addition to professional tournaments, it also organizes amateur tournaments. It also operates a training gym. Its slogan is "Hybrid Wrestling. The company took its name from the name of a sport that is believed to be the predecessor of the ancient Greek martial art "Pancration. The godfather is Carl Gottsch.
As a member organization of the Japan Fighting Federation, it is under the umbrella of the Japan Wrestling Association. The organization held its inaugural match at Tokyo Bay NK Hall on September 21, 1993, with professional wrestlers Seikatsu Funaki and Minoru Suzuki in tow.The organization is a descendant of the new UWF, which was the parent organization of the Fujiwaragumi.
The group advocated a "complete meritocracy," and under the tutelage of Carl Gotch, they won many fans with their high-spaced fights that gave rise to the popular phrase "second kills. He also actively competes in an amateur mixed martial arts tournament called JML.

How Pro-wrestling started in Japan?

At one time, Japanese professional wrestling gained such popularity that it was ranked alongside sumo wrestling and professional baseball. The images of heroes in the ring such as Rikidozan, Giant Baba, and Antonio Inoki are burned into the memories of Japanese people. In this article, we look back at Japanese professional wrestling from its origins to its present state.

Prewar Japanese Wrestlers Debut in the U.S.The first Japanese professional wrestler is believed to be Sorakichi Matsuda, a former sumo wrestler, who debuted in the U.S. in 1883. Several other Japanese and Japanese-Americans are confirmed to have been active as professional wrestlers, mainly in the United States. Mikokuyama, who was active as a wrestler with Mazda, held the "Seiyo Daikokuryoku" in Ginza, Tokyo in 1887 after returning to Japan. This is considered the first professional wrestling show in Japan, but it failed to attract an audience.
Postwar Era: The Era of RikidozanThe Japanese professional wrestling world considers 1951, the year of Rikidozan's debut, to be the first year of professional wrestling in Japan. It was not until 1953, when Rikidozan launched Nippon Professional Wrestling, that professional wrestling took root. In the early postwar period, when many Japanese were anti-American, the sight of Rikidozan knocking down a foreign wrestler with karate chops was a hit with the crowds watching on street TV, and the sport became as popular as professional baseball and sumo wrestling.
Late Showa Era, the Era of the Rivalry of the HerdsmenAfter Rikidozan's death, Tokyo Pro-Wrestling and International Pro-Wrestling (both now defunct) were successively launched, followed by New Japan Pro-Wrestling by Antonio Inoki, who had supported Japanese wrestling after Rikidozan's death (in December 1963), After the death of Rikidozan (December 1963), Antonio Inoki, who had been supporting Japanese professional wrestling, launched New Japan Pro-Wrestling, and Giant Baba launched All Japan Pro-Wrestling.
From the 1970s onward, Inoki, with the goal of becoming the strongest professional wrestler in the world, engaged in interracial martial arts matches with Willem Ruska and Muhammad Ali, while Baba, through his connections with the National Wrestling Alliance (NWA), invited many big-name foreign wrestlers and gained popularity with each of them. International Pro-Wrestling also developed its own fan base through its European and death match lines.
In the 1980s, the so-called "Tsurufuji Choten" wrestlers emerged, including Baba's disciples Jumbo Tsuruta and Tenryu Genichiro, and Inoki's disciples Fujinami Tatsumi and Choshu Riki. In New Japan, Satoshi Sayama made his debut as Tiger Mask, and in 1984, the UWF was launched, establishing a shoot-style wrestling without the show element, a milestone that would later lead to the rise of mixed martial arts.
Heisei Era, Sluggish Popularity of Wrestling and Rampant OrganizationsIn 1988, Atsushi Onita launched FMW. The group achieved success with shows centering on death matches, establishing the category of indie groups.
In the 1990s, many indie groups were launched one after another in response to the success of FMW, and an era of group turmoil began. Around this time, Baba and Inoki retired from the forefront, and the popularity of pro wrestling began to fade. Wrestling broadcasts, which had previously been broadcast in prime time, moved to the late-night slot, and the genre became increasingly manicized.
On the other hand, the attendance reached its peak due in part to the increased use of venues such as the Tokyo Dome. Since American pro wrestling switched to television-led shows around this time, it became difficult to invite foreign wrestlers to Japan, and Japanese pro wrestling began to focus on fights between Japanese wrestlers.
In the late 1990s, the rise of mixed martial arts such as K-1 and PRIDE in the late 1990s took over the role of mixed martial arts that pro wrestling had previously assumed. The industry was then deprived of the different martial arts aspect that pro wrestling had undertaken until then.
Antonio Inoki's long-held belief that "pro wrestling is the best" led many pro wrestlers to enter the mixed martial arts ring, but few of them achieved any results, and this contributed to the decline in popularity.
In 1997, Plum Mariko of JWP Women's Pro Wrestling died in an accident during a match. It was the first ring accident in the history of Japanese pro wrestling.
Current entertainment-oriented and regional pro wrestlingIn the 2000s, the power of the Japanese pro wrestling world changed drastically. Mitsuharu Misawa, who became president of All Japan after Baba's death, and Motoko Baba, Baba's widow who had authority over the management of the organization, had a conflict over the management of the organization. In New Japan, Shinya Hashimoto is dismissed from the organization, and ZERO-ONE is newly launched, ushering in a new era of four organizations.
Meanwhile, All Japan, which had lost almost all of its wrestlers, decided to exchange with New Japan in order to keep the organization alive. 2002 saw Keiji Mutoh leave New Japan to join All Japan, and in October of the same year he became the organization's president. Interactions between major organizations and indie groups have been frequent since the 1990s, but since the 2000s, interactions between major organizations have been more active.
In 2006, the Global Wrestling Federation was established with the aim of establishing Japan's first unified professional wrestling organization. In the early 2000s, the so-called "third generation" emerged, but they could not surpass the older generations, such as the Three Musketeers and the Four Heavenly Kings, in terms of popularity, and the older generations still played a central role in the entertainment industry.
However, Shinya Hashimoto and Mitsuharu Misawa passed away suddenly in 2005 and 2009, respectively, and the other Musketeers and Four Heavenly Kings were unable to compete regularly due to their retirements or absence due to injury. In 2011, New Japan, All Japan, and Noah held a joint event, ALL TOGETHER, to support the recovery from the Great East Japan Earthquake, and in 2012, New Japan and All Japan held a joint event to celebrate their 40th anniversary.
